🔥 21 Powerful Mental Maths Tricks You Must Master
Multiply by 5:
Half the number, add a zero.
Example: 46 × 5 → 23 → 230.
Multiply by 11:
Add adjacent digits and place between.
Example: 52 × 11 → 5 (5+2=7) 2 → 572.
Square ending in 5:
25² → 2 × 3 = 6; add 25 → 625.
Multiply near 100:
98 × 96 → 100² - (2+4)×100 + 2×4 → 9216.
Percentage of a number:
10% → ÷10; 5% → half of 10%; 20% → double 10%.
Multiply by 9:
Multiply by 10, then subtract the number.
Example: 47 × 9 → 470 - 47 → 423.
Divisibility by 3/9:
The sum of digits divisible by 3 or 9.
Divisibility by 11:
The alternate digit sum difference is divisible by 11.
Doubling + halving:
If one number is halved, double the other.
Example: 16 × 35 → 8 × 70 → 560.
Multiplying by 4:
Double twice.
Example: 23 × 4 → 23 × 2 = 46 → 46 × 2 = 92.
Approximation:
Round numbers smartly; adjust the difference.
Example: 49 × 51 → (50 -1)(50 +1) = 50² -1 → 2500 -1 → 2499.
Add big numbers fast:
Group tens, then units.
Example: 67 + 88 → (60+80=140) + (7+8=15) → 155.
Subtract from the round number:
5000 - 376 → 5000 - 400 + 24 → 4600 + 24 → 4624.
Multiply decimals:
Ignore the decimal, multiply, and place the decimal back.
Example: 2.5 × 0.4 → 25 × 4 = 100 → 0.10.
Convert fractions to percentages:
½ = 50%, ⅓ ≈ 33%, ¼ = 25%, ⅕ = 20%, ⅛ = 12.5%.
Square small numbers:
(7)² → 49; (13)² → 169; (15)² → 225.
Cube small numbers:
(2)³ → 8; (3)³ → 27; (4)³ → 64.
Find the remainder when dividing by 9:
Sum digits; reduce if needed.
Example: 345 → 3+4+5=12 → 1+2=3 → remainder 3.
Multiply two numbers ending in zero:
Ignore zeros, multiply, and add zeros back.
Example: 30 × 400 → 3 × 4 =12 → add 3 zeros → 12,000.
Multiply by 15:
Multiply by 10 + half the number.
Example: 16 × 15 → (16×10=160) + (8) → 168.
Fast average:
Sum numbers, divide smartly using round multiples.
Example: Average of 18, 22 → sum =40 → ÷2 → 20.
